***Note -- This has more or less been asked of me three times since the Pork Festival. One person is a retired TCSC teacher. Two are parents of current students.
To answer your question as directly as I can, NO - if you are opposed to the referendum, in my opinion that does not make you an enemy of the school corporation.
This referendum decision is complicated, and that is why as of today (9/25) I have not endorsed or condemned the referendum proposal. There are some people who will pay NO additional property tax if this passes. There are some people who will HAPPILY pay an additional couple/few hundred dollars a year in property tax. We all know businesses will pass on their portion of the referendum to the consumers. There are some people who would happily pay that as consumers.
There are some people who are retired/senior citizens who are on a fixed income and can't afford it. There are single mothers and single fathers....there are grandparents raising grandkids...who can't afford it. Many of these same people won't be able to afford it when businesses will pass this tax along to consumers. Ask a farmer how this will affect their business.
Let's not forget that our utility rates are not going to stay low.
THERE IS A LOT TO CONSIDER. This will affect people differently - for 8 years if it passes.
There are some people who recognize that THIS IS A PROBLEM CAUSED BY THE STATE. These people also understand that the state is sitting on BILLIONS of our money in surplus and reserves. They understand that the state could fix this problem THAT THEY CAUSED. Those people are opposed to the referendum on principle.
Each voter has got to decide for themselves where they stand on the issue of a referendum, lasting 8 years, for this school corporation. Become as educated as possible. Talk to people. Do your homework and vote accordingly.
