Should We (TCSC) Require School Uniforms For All Students?

I understand why some schools require uniforms.  Some schools believe that requiring everyone to wear the same clothing reduces bullying.  Uniforms "level the playing field" in an attempt to hide clear economic differences hoping to reduce social friction.  It eliminates the name brands, trendy clothing and "status/privilege" involved with clothing.

A required uniform also creates a huge problem - added expense for families.  We already have families who struggle to provide some of the basic needs.  Requiring a family to purchase clothes (including shoes) that are only going to be worn to school is cost prohibitive for some.  You would think that each child would need more than one uniform since doing laundry every day doesn't happen in every home.

Would staff be required to wear a uniform as well?  Whether you like it or not, the days are long gone where men teachers are expected to wear a shirt, tie, dress pants and dress shoes...and female teachers rarely if ever wear dresses.  I understand dressing for your profession, however there is also something great to be said about dressing for the job and being comfortable.

Overall, I think the TCSC dress code is appropriate.  I do believe it should be reviewed from time to time.  When I was in high school, Spuds McKenzie was a popular brand character and kids wore Spuds/Budweiser shirts.  As time went on, the school decided that schools weren't the place to wear clothing that promotes alcohol.  Fashion styles change so the dress code should be modified keeping in mind clothes should cover everything important and shouldn't be a distraction.  There is also something to be said about a child's freedom to wear clothing that they like and are comfortable in.   I am NOT in favor of school uniforms.
